'faggot'

For Miguel Gutierrez (and the powerful people)

Transcript of video of Casey Legler reading a written introduction for her video performance piece: 'faggot' (for Miguel Gutierrez and the powerful people), explaining its publication in response to Russian legislation outlawing “homosexual propaganda” and its dedication in solidarity with gay, lesbian, trans and queer folks, and their allies, in Russia:

'My name is Casey.  I am reading this directly from my notes so as to remain accurate.  This feels correct as this is important.  This is an explanation to a video piece I created for my brother and genius choreographer Miguel Gutierrez and the powerful people back in 2010.  With his permission, I am publishing it here in dedication to my brothers and sisters in Russia.

I’d like to call to mind a famous Russian thinker, Mikhail Bakunin - who was problematic in some ways but who’s following quote is sound:

"I am truly free only when all men and women are free.  The freedom of others, far from negating or limiting my own, is on the contrary its necessary premise and confirmation.’

I’d also like to call to mind a story given to me by my friend and collaborator, Siri May.  It is a Wadeye women adage as relayed to her through story-lines:

"If you have come here to help, then you are wasting your time, but if your liberation is bound by ours, then let us work together."

I cannot do much but I can and do make art and it is in the spirit of the Wadeye women that I offer this piece and add it to the other efforts of solidarity in bearing witness to the struggles and challenges of my brothers and sisters in Russia.  I hope that in it they may find inspiration for courage, fortitude and the grace with which to proceed.
